Keeping a clean bathroom can be difficult for anyone. It is arguably the most used room in a home and gets dirty quite easily. To knock out germs and odors a quick run to your grocery store to by cleaners might seem like the best idea. However, many of these chemicals may be harmful for the people and pets living in your home.
Here are three easy natural products to clean a bathroom.
Lemon juice and salt
Lemon juice is widely used as a natural cleaner. The acidity in lemon juice helps break down dirty sticky surfaces and has a disinfectant property allowing the surface to be clean from bacteria. When it comes to cleaning your bathroom cut a lemon in half and place it in a bowl of salt. The salt will attach to the lemon. Use this combination to rub down your sink, bathtub, and shower tiles. The acid in the lemon will dissolve any soap scum that is built up in the areas you’re using it to clean. The salt will help scrub away any dirty looking scum without scratching your surfaces. After your scrub your surfaces with the lemon and salt, wash down all surfaces thoroughly with your shower head or wipe down with a water wet rag. The lemon also will leave a nice scent behind letting you know the area is clean.
Hydrogen peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is a great disinfectant to use when it comes to mold and mildew. If you have buildup of these properties, consider using hydrogen peroxide as an alternative to store bought cleaners.
When cleaning your bathroom use hydrogen peroxide by pouring a small amount (quarter cup) into a spray bottle and mix with water. Spray the mixture on all surfaces that you decide need to be disinfected. These could be shower walls, sides of toilets, etc. Allow the spray to sit for about 10 to 15 minutes. Come back and wipe down all surfaces with a rag or towel. Using hydrogen peroxide is not only safe but it is very effective as it breaks down the scum into oxygen and water making it safe to clean.
Essential oils
Essential oils hit their height of popularity a few years ago but it doesn’t mean they can’t still be used when cleaning your bathroom. Essential oils provide an easy way to make your home smell great. Many of them have antibacterial properties you may not be aware of. When cleaning your bathroom mix a few drops of your favorite oils into your spray bottle mix of vinegar and water. Lavender, eucalyptus, and tea tree are great options.
Spray this mixture around your bathroom, focusing on the toilet, shower and sink. You can even spray your cleaning mixture on the rags you use to wipe down surfaces. Just remember if you use vinegar or any stone surfaces you need to immediately wipe it down with a wet rag of just clean water to prevent dulling of the surface.
Cleaning your bathroom with harsh chemicals doesn’t need to be a thing you have to do. Simple ingredients like lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide, and essential oils can help you leave your bathroom looking and smelling great. These natural alternatives are safer alternatives to typical store-bought chemicals and will help you keep your family safe from harsh fumes and potential dangers those chemicals may present. The next time you clean your bathroom consider these few alternatives.
