Vacations are supposed to be times of relaxation, but they’re often times when we get stressed and gain weight. If you’re planning your next vacation and want to stay fit while doing so, it is possible simply by following a few simple guidelines each day. These tips can be easily included in your daily vacation routine.
Seven ways to stay fit on your next vacation:
Pack your priorities
Pack your workout clothes and sneakers or running shoes. Pack a water bottle that’s easily accessible at all times. Make sure your destination has gyms or other fitness facilities before you go. Bring a mat for yoga, Pilates, or stretching exercises if you’re travelling somewhere without any specialized equipment.
Don’t overpack your schedule
When travelling, it is tempting to pack your schedule with as much sightseeing and exploring as possible. However, it is just as important to take time for yourself. Be sure to give yourself time for exercise each day and eat healthy meals in order not only stay fit during your vacation but also maintain a healthy lifestyle when you return home.
Exercise in new ways
If you’re going to be staying in a place for an extended period of time, you might want to consider getting out and exploring the area. There are many opportunities for exercise just waiting around every corner. For example, hiking is a great way to stay fit while exploring nature. Just remember to take water and snacks with you.
Cycling is another great way to stay fit. For example if you’re on flights from Montenegro to Greece, take your bicycle with you. Not only will it help combat the steep hills of Athens but it also allows travelers to explore remote areas where cars can’t go.
Track your progress
Do a 5-minute workout every morning before breakfast. Remember, it doesn’t have to be anything too strenuous. 10 jumping jacks, 10 pushups, 20 crunches, or any other easy cardio routine will do the trick. Drink at least 8 cups of water a day. When you’re travelling through airports and train stations, try to walk as much as possible (even if it means taking the escalator instead of the elevator).
Build fitness into your day
As you plan your next vacation, consider the following ways to stay fit: Pack a workout outfit and sneakers in your bag so that you can get a morning sweat session in before breakfast. Hire a bike rental, rent a car with GPS, or bring your own GPS device so that you can explore the area and stop along the way for hikes or other fitness activities. Ask locals about local trails or other fitness opportunities in the area – they may be able to give you some insider tips.
Get enough sleep
One of the most important things you can do for your health and fitness is get enough sleep. While it might seem hard to make time for rest, it’s worth scheduling a nap before an evening workout or turning in early for the night. When we travel, this becomes much more difficult than usual.
For starters, one of the main sources of disturbance from light pollution is from our electronic devices; the screens emit blue-wavelength light that makes it hard to fall asleep quickly. Second, there are usually fewer activities available for daytime recreation during vacation than there are when at home; so less time for resting and more potential exposure to daylight hours.
