As we move toward the New Year, it’s natural to look ahead, but that doesn’t make it any less daunting for some. Although those with a sense of purpose and contentment are likely to find it exciting to think about the months to come, those who feel directionless and uncertain of where they’re going can find it much more difficult. It can be a challenging time for lots of people, especially 20- and 30-somethings who imagine they should have their whole lives mapped out, and yet lack any real clarity as to what they want from the future.
So, how do you get out of your rut, set yourself some positive and proactive goals, and strive toward success in 2019? Here are a few tips and tricks you might find helpful.
Set yourself some New Year’s resolutions
A lot of people struggle to come up with New Year’s resolutions, but they can be a really good place to start when it comes to getting your life in order. The trick, however, is to make them obtainable. It’s no good setting impossible goals that you’ll struggle to achieve, so try to be realistic in order to relieve yourself of some of the stress. Rather than aiming for a promotion, for example, aspire to have progressed at work by the year’s end, or to have been entrusted with more responsibility by your employer. Keep your objectives small, simple, and straightforward, and you’re much more likely to be successful in meeting them.
Write a five- or ten-year plan
When building the future you want, creating a five- or even ten-year plan can be particularly helpful. Remember it’s okay not be exactly where you envisaged – you have plenty of time to get where you need to be. The best way to achieve this, is to have broader ambitions, by writing down general areas of your life you want to improve upon, so you have a better idea of where to focus your efforts and energy. Some things – such as finding your soul mate and settling down – might be out of your control, but you could include points such as ‘meet more people’ or ‘try online dating’. After all, being proactive is never a bad thing.
Have your fortune told
Additionally, some people find it helpful to visit a psychic or clairvoyant. Turning to the spiritual has helped many people to discover a sense of direction and work out what they truly want. Whether you believe in the mystical or not, it can still assist in clarifying your own desires. Tarot readings can be especially handy in this, as their primary purpose is to aid in illuminating our understanding of situations that challenge us, and they’re very much open to interpretation.
Talk to your friends and family
When it comes to working out what you really want from life, it can also be a good idea to talk to your friends and family, especially people who are older than you. Ask them what goals they’d aim towards if they could turn the clock back ‘x’ years and find themselves in your shoes. Seeing what other people value can be a great way to gage what you’d like your own priorities to be. That said, remember we’re all individuals: you don’t have to aim toward what everybody else wants, but should focus instead on the things that will make you happiest in the long-run.
Ultimately, the trick is not to see the goals you make as being set in stone and stressful, but more as guiding lights to help you find your way. Have an idea of where you want to be, work toward it, and remember that no matter how slow your progress, you’ll get there in the end. It’s a new year filled with exciting opportunities and it’s time for you to embrace them.
