How to Develop Better Hearing Health


According to figures from the World Health Organization, about 5% of the world’s population suffer from hearing loss. This includes 432 million adults and 34 million children. Most of these cases stem from genetics, but injuries, exposure to loud noises and other external factors can also lead to hearing loss.

Taking good care of your sense of hearing is always important. However, it’s impossible to avoid situations that could hurt the ears and cause an infection. Your best defense is to adopt habits that will lead to better hearing health. Here are some of the best ways that will prevent hearing loss and enjoy the wonderful sounds that life has to offer:

Get a hearing test

If you are constantly exposed to loud noises, you may want to look for an ENT doctor and have your hearing tested. Hearing loss often occurs in people who are exposed to places where noise levels can reach as high as 70 decibels. People working at airports, construction sites, and even musical events are particularly at risk to the point that the slightest sounds make it difficult for them to get quality sleep. Don’t wait until your hearing gradually fades away. You may want to undergo an audiometry evaluation to see how sensitive you are to various frequencies and pitches.

Clear the ear canal

While earwax can be beneficial in protecting the inner structure of your ear, excessive buildup often leads to infection and long-term hearing loss. In many cases, impacted earwax may cause constant pain and dizziness. This alone is a good reason why earwax removal is important. Still, it’s never wise to handle the process yourself or even with the help of a friend. Switching jobs due to the risk of hearing loss isn’t always possible. Fortunately, there are ways you can stay on the job or be somewhere without the prospect of damaging your ears. You can wear ear plugs or ear protectors when you are at a construction site, a race track or a firing range. If you are exposed to constant noise, take at least 15 minutes to rest your ears. Lastly, whenever possible, be sure not to stay anywhere near the source of loud noise, such as speakers or demolition sites.
