Are you looking for a sweet roll recipe to make for your holiday breakfast? My Mom made these homemade cinnamon rolls every year for the holidays. Soft, gooey, and easy to make, they’re always a hit with family and friends!

If you need a special breakfast for Christmas morning or any weekend brunch, I can’t recommend this cinnamon roll recipe enough. It’s one of my favorites. I hope it becomes one of yours too!

How to make these cinnamon rolls

Dough:

  • 11⁄3 cups whole milk
  • 1⁄3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1⁄3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 envelope (¼ ounce) active dry yeast
  • 1½ cups whole wheat flour
  • 1⅓ cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda

Cinnamon Butter:

  • 4 tablespoons (½ stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
    1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons whole milk or heavy cream
  • 1½ tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • Pinch of salt

Directions:

To make the dough:

  1. In a large heavy-bottomed pan, combine the milk, oil, and granulated sugar.
  2. Heat over medium-low heat until the mixture just comes to a boil.
  3. Remove from the heat, cover, and let stand for 45 minutes.
  4. Add the yeast, stir to combine, and set aside for 5 minutes or until bubbles have appeared on the surface and the yeast has activated.
  5. Stir in the whole wheat flour and 1 cup all-purpose flour.
  6. Cover with a kitchen towel and set aside until the dough has risen and doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  7. Add the remaining 1⁄3 cup all-purpose flour, the salt, baking powder, and baking soda and mix to combine with a spoon or your hands.
  8. Transfer the dough to a well-floured surface and, using your hands, press into an 11×15-inch rectangle about ½-inch thick.

To make the cinnamon butter:

  1. In a bowl, combine the melted butter, granulated sugar, and cinnamon.
  2. Brush the mixture evenly over the top of the dough.
  3. Starting at one long end, gently roll the dough into a log shape. (I use a bench scraper to help me along.)
  4. Slice the log into twelve 1- to 1½-inch-thick slices and place them, cut-side down, into 2 greased pie dishes.
  5. Cover with a kitchen towel and let stand for 30 minutes as they rise some more.
  6. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  7. Bake the buns for 15 minutes, or until golden.

To make the glaze:

  1. In a bowl, vigorously whisk the powdered sugar, milk or cream, butter, and salt until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Let stand for 5 minutes, then drizzle the glaze over the buns and allow to set (or eat straight away!).
