A Southwest Burger features a seasoned beef patty with green chilies and onions and then can be topped with creamy avocado, smoky chipotle mayo, and is served in a toasted bun for a flavorful twist on a classic favorite. And check out the special sauce recipe we have included.

If you are looking for a little more spice, try adding diced jalapenos to the burger mixture for added heat. And feel free to use your favorite cheese – sharp cheddar is a great option.

How to make the best Southwest Cheeseburgers

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Ground Beef (75% to 80% lean)
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped green onions
  • i 4 ounce can of green chilies
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • Salt and pepper
  • 8 hamburger buns, split, toasted
  • 1/2 cup shredded Mexican cheese blend
  • 1 cup chopped tomato
  • 2 Avocados sliced

Directions:

  1. Combine Ground Beef, green onions, green chilies and cumin in medium bowl, mixing lightly but thoroughly. Lightly shape into eight 1/2-inch thick patties.
  2. Place patties on grid over medium, ash-covered coals. Grill, covered, 8 to 10 minutes (over medium heat on preheated gas grill, covered, 7 to 9 minutes), until instant-read thermometer inserted horizontally into center registers 160°F, turning occasionally. Season with salt and pepper, as desired.
  3. Cooking Tip: To broil, place patties on rack in broiler pan so surface of beef is 3 to 4 inches from heat. Broil 10 to 12 minutes, turning once, until instant-read thermometer inserted horizontally into center registers 160°F.
  4. Cooking times are for fresh or thoroughly thawed Ground Beef. Color is not a reliable indicator of Ground Beef doneness.
  5. Place burger on bottom of each bun; top with cheese, avocado and tomato.
  6. Close sandwiches.

How to make your own Southwest Sauce

Ingredients:

    • ¼ cup mayonnaise
    • ¼ cup sour cream
    • 2 teaspoons ranch seasoning
    • 1 teaspoon lime juice
    • ½ teaspoon chipotle chile powder

Directions:

    • Combine mayonnaise, sour cream, ranch seasoning, lime juice and chipotle chile powder and whisk together until smooth. 
    • Chill in fridge while making burgers for flavors to meld.
