Take Your Time
The most important thing you can do is take your time. There is not much you can do to speed up your recovery. If your doctor tells you that your ankle sprain will be better in 8 weeks, don’t try to walk around after only 6. It may not be fun sitting on your couch or being unable to do all the things that you want to do, but it’s better to put the time in now rather than reinjuring yourself.
Rely on Others
It’s very difficult, perhaps even impossible, to get through a major injury after an accident without some form of assistance. You will need a solid team around you to help you through this time, so don’t be afraid to rely on them. For example, you may need your friends and family members to drive you to the doctor or help you with your laundry. Trying to cook while on crutches isn’t an easy task, so let someone else cook for you for a while.
Another person you may need is a doctor, nurse or physical therapist. These people enjoy helping others and are being paid to do so. Develop a level of trust with these people and make use of their expertise and experience whenever you can. Listening to their advice is the best way to get through your recovery.
In some cases, you may need to work with a lawyer after your accident. If the accident occurred on someone else’s property, they may be liable for damages. Find Ways to Keep Your Spirits Up
There will be some difficult times during your recovery. Some days you will grow frustrated with your lack of progress or with being unable to do certain things. That’s why it’s important to find ways to keep your spirits up. Find some activities you like that you can do while injured. For example, now may be the perfect time to learn how to paint, or to read some great books or to learn a musical instrument. Find something that you can turn to on those tougher days to distract you from your frustration. Even something as simple as putting on your favorite movie can help.
Set a Goal
Lastly, you should set a goal for yourself. Goals give you something to aim for so that you continue to work on your recovery. For instance, let’s say you tore your Achilles tendon at the gym. A good goal might first be to walk around your block, with your next goal being to run a 5K. By imagining yourself running a 5K, you’ll give yourself the motivation you need to continue through your physical therapy. Then when you are out training, those days stuck on the couch will seem far behind you.
There’s no easy way to get through an injury, but you can make it a little easier. By keeping your spirits up, focusing on a goal and relying on those around you, you can make your injury time more manageable.
