Many people wish to lose weight and have been trying to get the ball rolling by first choosing to fuel their body right. It is understood that in order to sustain a healthy weight, you must not only work out, but eat a diet high in vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants. However, what many fail to realize is that everyone’s body is different.

Certain foods can cause adverse reactions leading to complications that can include gluten and carb intolerances, weight regain, and other things that make it challenging, if not impossible to lose weight.

If you have been trying for some time to slim down with little to no luck, you may need to take a closer look at the foods you’re choosing to eat. Below are some surprising categories that could hinder your health and fitness efforts:

  • Dairy – It can be assumed that having a glass of milk, yogurt, or slice of cheese can be a healthy option for weight loss. Whether eating products made from whole, skim, 1, or 2 percent milk, it can be bad for your digestive system. Referred to as an inflammatory, milk increases the development of mucus which can slow down the digestive process and keep toxins in the body longer leading to leaky gut and a bunch of other issues. The body needs things like vitamin D and calcium, but they can be derived from other foods and dairy alternatives like almond milk as well as increased exposure to the sun.
  • Wheat – Most people are taught that a healthy alternative to consuming too many white carbs like white bread and rice was wheat products. Packed with fiber and obviously a better option than white carbohydrates, wheat often goes under the radar for foods to avoid. Lots of people develop a gluten intolerance or sensitivity to gluten an ingredient found in whole grain foods which can cause weight regain and a bunch of other complications. Since fiber is necessary for improved digestive health, it is recommended that you find sources in other foods that are gluten-free. Some high fiber foods include beans, leafy greens, corn, broccoli, and sweet potatoes.
  • Tofu – When deciding to become vegan or vegetarian and give up meat it is all too common to switch to tofu or products made of soy. However, soy is actually dangerous when consumed in large quantities. It is genetically modified, highly allergenic, contaminated with pesticides, and depresses thyroid function which can increase weight and slow the metabolism.

When starting out on their weight loss journey, everyone does their best to eliminate foods they believe are bad and incorporate more good. As there is a wealth of information out there on what to do and not do, all too often people consume foods that are counteracting their progress and causing more harm than good. That’s why, before creating a diet to lose weight, it is highly recommended that you speak with a doctor or nutritionists to ensure you’re incorporating things that will benefit you in the long-run.
